Churrasco sandwiches are popular in Latinamerica. You can expect delicious hearty bread (think more baguette roll than brioche) and thin steaks perfectly cooked. Other fillings vary by country and restaurant.
The Chilean Churrasco Sandwich is a popular and fast food in Chile. It typically consists of thinly sliced grilled beef, sturdy bread (pan Amasado, Marraqueta, or pan Frica), and various toppings and condiments.
This sandwich is known for its hearty and flavorful combination of ingredients. Here’s a breakdown of the critical components:
- Churrasco (Grilled Beef): The term “churrasco” originally refers to grilled beef, and in the context of this sandwich, it typically involves thinly sliced beef steak. The beef is seasoned with salt and pepper before being grilled to perfection.
- Bread: Marraqueta has a crusty exterior and a soft interior, making it an ideal sandwich choice. Pan Amasado is a sturdy country roll. Pan Frica is close to a hamburger roll. The bread is usually sliced and toasted before being used for the churrasco sandwich.
- Toppings and Condiments: The sandwich is often adorned with various toppings and condiments to enhance its flavor. Common additions include:
- Tomato: Sliced tomatoes add a juicy and fresh element to the sandwich.
- Avocado (Palta): Avocado is a popular ingredient in Chilean cuisine, and it is often spread on the bread or sliced and added to the churrasco sandwich.
- Mayonnaise: A generous mayonnaise spread is a common condiment for added creaminess.
- Sauces: Some variations include sauces such as aji (a spicy chili sauce) or pebre (a traditional Chilean condiment made with tomatoes, onions, and cilantro).
- Optional Additions: Depending on personal preferences, other ingredients like green beans, pickles, sauerkraut, and cheese may be included to customize the sandwich to individual tastes.
Sandwiches are so rooted in our Chilean culture that I do not remember when I first tried them. The truth is that before coming to the United States, I always ate them at coffee shops and restaurants, never when visiting with friends or made by my family. Completos, the Chilean hotdogs, are more frequently a homemade affair.
In Argentina, Churrasco sandwiches are usually topped with chimichurri sauce.
Other Churrasco sandwich combinations popular in Chile:
- Chemilico (Churrasco, caramelized onion, and sunny side egg).
- Chacarero (Churrasco, tomato and green beans).
- Barros Luco (Churrasco and melted cheese).
- Churrasco con ensalada chilena (tomato, onions).

Thank you Pilar! I’m somewhat challenged in the kitchen so this really helped a lot. A long long time ago, wife and I ventured south from Santiago and I remember seeing churrasco x palta wherever we stopped. I seem to remember that in many cases it was served on hallulla (had to look it up) bread. Wish we could find that where I live! Every experience we had in Chile was memorable and magical. Thank you for sharing!

Send any question my way!

I was born in Chillan and my dad is from Pucon. I have only visited Chile once as a teen and happened to be in Santiago with my family and experienced the churrasco for the first time and must have had 10 of them over a weeks time. Wow, your pictures brought back some great memories. I will be making these for my wife and kiddos.

This only makes two?

Yes, these replace a meal in Chile, they are big. You could make them smaller or increase the recipe and make more.
