Although in central Chile, where I grew up, is never as hot as the Summers in Houston, iced drinks are very popular and my grandmother used to indulge us with this Chocolate Dulce de Leche Granita during the summer holidays. The truth is so easy that we, the grandchildren, soon learned to do it alone and for our friends. In our house there was always milk, never Sodas, I grew up having warm milk with chocolate in the mornings and the adults of the house will always add it to their coffee or tea. It is part of our Latino heritage.
The Chocolate Dulce de Leche Granita is delicious, easy to prepare, economic and also with a good supply of protein (a glass of milk 230 ml or 8 oz. has 8 grams of protein), a glass of milk also gives you 9 essential nutrients, including vitamin B, A (necessary for the immune system to work better and for bone formation), calcium, potassium and vitamin D. And remember that the white milk does not contain added sugar, all sugar (carbohydrates) of the white milk comes from lactose and is naturally occurrent.

Other ideas to flavor your milk without adding table sugar are: Use fruits like ripe bananas, mango, figs and dates that provide fiber, vitamins, and minerals, essences or extracts of vanilla, orange, almond are also easy ways to vary the flavors. Add honey, which compared with the same amount of sugar, it brings more sweetness, I mean you can use less, and also provides minerals.
The Chocolate Dulce de Leche Granita is a sublime combination for Chilean, and I’m sure you will like too.
