In Chile, common beverages for children include a variety of non-alcoholic options. One popular traditional drink is “leche con plátano,” or banana milkshake. Bananas are a popular and widely consumed fruit in Chile. This beverage is popular during the summer and winter months. Other beloved fruit milkshakes in Chile are Leche con Frutillas (strawberries) and Leche con Duraznos (Peaches).
Other standard non-alcoholic drinks for children in Chile include:
- Jugo (Fruit Juice): Chileans enjoy a variety of fresh fruit juices. Popular choices include orange juice (jugo de Naranja), apple juice (jugo de manzana), grape juice (jugo de uva), Mango, and Chirimoya. These juices can be found commercially bottled or freshly squeezed.
- Bebidas Gaseosas (Carbonated Drinks): Popular soda brands offer a range of carbonated beverages in various flavors. Children widely consume these as a treat.
- Flavored Milk: Available ready to drink or mix at home with powdered flavors.
Water is a staple and healthy option for hydration for children in Chile, just as it is in many other places.
In many ways, Leche con plátano, or Milk with Banana, is for the Chileans, what Horchata is for the Mexicans. It must be served on every kid’s birthday, and it’s also a popular flavor for the boxed milk to send as a snack to school. The recipe is dead simple and refreshing. Enjoy!

I like it better to just freeze the banana and leave out the ice. It makes it thicker and creamier.

Nice idea. This recipe is based on an old-time custom in Chile, where freezing was scarce.
